Bailout or Bust: Sould Companies too Big to Fail be Broken up?
Submitted by XR4-IT on Wed, 03/25/2009 - 10:25am.Before I start I will confess that economics is not a field that has offered me much interest, but with our current economic environment where we have financial firms that are “Too Big to Fail” I have to take another look and ask myself is a Bank or other financial firm that is too big to let fail, too big to let exist?
Back when I was in High School it seemed that it was explained to me that we had laws that prevented these types of super firms from forming. I remember that back during the Great Depression that government did things like “Trust Busting” and braking up monopolies.
One law that was put in place during the Great Depression was known as the Banking Act of 1933 though commonly called the Second Glass-Steagall Act or just Glass-Steagall Act. This act provided a separation of bank types according to there business, and it prevented a commercial bank from merging with an investment bank, or with an insurance firm.
Is Cyberspace the Largest U.S. Vulnerability?
Submitted by glider on Sun, 09/28/2008 - 8:44pm.Back in the early 90’s the World saw the power of the United States military when it cut through the 5th largest world military (Iraq) in less than 100 hours. This proved to the rest of the world that we did in fact have the most powerful and technologically advanced military in the world. But has this fear made for a more motivated enemy?
Recently, and less projected by the media, Russia made prior attacks on the country of Georgia simply by hacking into all of their government systems and shutting them down. This was then followed by military fire power which we all know about.
"What IF" articles
Submitted by jeff on Thu, 01/17/2008 - 9:52am.So I was thinking today that it might be nice if people would write some "What IF" articles on the political candidates as to what would happen if they won and took the Presidency. Like, "What IF Ron Paul Won?" - "What if Hillary Won?" etc.. etc.. You get the point. Anyway, for those willing to venture, these would be interesting articles. Please feel free to write something up and submit it. I'll review them and post them to the site as quickly as possible.
Airports SUCK!
Submitted by glider on Sat, 11/17/2007 - 11:12am.So I have been playing the whole "job search" game. Interviewing on campus with prospective future employers in hopes of getting that coveted second interview and be flown out to their corporate headquarters for the final round.
I have been lucky (if you can call it luck) to have a few companies fly me out to different cities and interview with them. I won't mention which ones in-case someone here applied and got rejected...but it was enough to keep me happy.
Anyway, I hate the AIRPORTS. It's so far past ridiculous that it's not even funny. First of all, TSA guys are out of control. I'm a white american male, but it's pretty obvious when they do some racial screening and pick out the middle eastern guys right out of the bunch for screening.
Then in case you didn't know, but evidently Toothpaste, Shaving Cream, and Hair Gel are highly explosive when combined, and will blow up a 737 airliner....yeah....I know, what a bunch of crap! The real deal is that you can't carry any liquid type items that exceed 3.5 oz (so 4.0 oz won't go), and those items must all fit in one clear 1 quart bag. Should you fail to meet their standards they question the heck out of you, and steal your stuff.
Shooting at Virginia Tech - Can this happen here? Can it be prevented?
Submitted by jeff on Mon, 04/16/2007 - 7:24pm.It's quite the sad situation over in Virginia. All our prayers go out the victims and their families. It seems to me that these types of things are becoming more frequent over the past 9 years. We had the most recent similar event up in Salt Lake City at Trolley Square - but could something like that happen here at BYU or UVSC (or anywhere in Provo/Orem for that matter) ????
Should BYU allow Concealed Weapon Permit holders to pack heat? UVSC technically is supposed to (but I'm told that they don't and illegally banish weapons from campus). Could something like this have been prevented, or at least stopped early had one student been armed and removed the shooter from mortality way before he was able to kill and harm so many???
What are the thoughts of others?
US Budget and US popular opinion
Submitted by Curtis on Sat, 03/11/2006 - 1:07am.A poll from last year on public opinion on the US Government Budget showed the majority of Americans wanted money spent exactly opposite to the way the current budget is set. Americans want less Defense/military spending and more spending on social items, less on Iraq and Afganistan war efforts and more on education, medical research or job training, less on nuclear weapons and a majority were in favor of rolling back tax cuts for the wealthy.
What about you? Does the US budget match your vision of how you want your tax dollars spent?
Another issue this poll brings up is how democratic we are as a nation. Is it the people who control policy or is it major corporations who profit from a certain kind of budget? What are your thoughts?
Family Values? Wealth and the fight against same-sex marriage
Submitted by NabberGnossi on Fri, 02/24/2006 - 12:13pm.This is one of my favorite scriptures:
Matthew 19:24 And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
It really throws a wrench in the Christian capitalism lifestyle doesn't it? How can a Pat Robertson speak of "values" when he profits off of blood diamonds? How can Jack Abramoff fight the culture war when he is fleecing Native Americans for millions through lobbying scandals? What is this strange marriage between money makers and "family values" (which usually means making sure those gays can't get married).
Case in point, the "free capitalist." I saw a billboard today for this website. I logged on and poked around. It seems pretty interesting, I've been researching the pious-rich for a while. It's strange that the religion of Jesus has produced so many millionaires fighting gay marriage, the "free capitalist" is no different. He runs another organization called SoFAITH which is just a cheap copy of the Family Research Council and all the other organizations that raise money to fight for families by fighting against gays and lesbians. (it's a great business opprotunity by the way, check out the store at SoFAITH. Fighting for families is good money)
