So, where do you fit on the Political Compass?

from the rockin'-internet-quizes dept.
This afternoon I stumbled upon a website where you take a quiz to determine where you fall on "The Political Compass". I like it because it describes a person's political persuasion in more precise terms than we're normally able to do, something badly needed in our current political arena. Once you finish the quiz they show you how your score relates to famous figures like Gandhi, George W. Bush, and Hitler.

Personally, I don't like being pigeonholed as a ... "conservative" because the term is so broad, implying too many things which are not representative of my views. By looking at what I've written here so far you would probably classify me as a stereotypical conservative due to being so against John Kerry, but again, that's a really poor description.

I'm interested in getting my friends to take the quiz to see how we relate ... (especially Lindsey, Kent, Glen, Janae and Dustin!) ... but curious to see what anyone else scores as well.

I have more to say about this but I'll post it later as a comment here when I get the chance.

Go take the quiz!

Economic Left/Right: -7.25 S

Economic Left/Right: -7.25
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -1.08

in february i was...
Economic Left/Right: -4.88
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -1.28

i wonder what happened to me.

My score

I came out being moderately liberal economically, and socially I was slightly authoritarian:

Economic Left/Right: -2.25
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.72

I think this test still fails to capture a lot of things. I guess that I'd like it to be broken down even further than just these two scales. I'm very liberal economically about certain things like the need for many forms of market regulation, but very conservative economically about others like being in favor of only limited wellfare and being against taxing the rich at a higher tax rate. The same goes for lots of social issues.

Another thing I noticed is that on this page they show liberal democrats as being something like +3 economically or in other words being conservative economically which I completely disagree with. I would say they're more like -5 economically. But what about affirmative action, high taxes + lots of extra government programs, higher tax brackets for the wealthy, socialized health care, and higher minimum wage? Being that I'm against all of those things and scored a -2.25 I would think liberal democrats would come out further to the left than myself.

Maybe this thing is rigged to make people whose views are more in-line with the republicans actually believe that they're more in-line with the democrats.

But anyway, I still think it's nice to see it broken down like this ... much better than having to simply call yourself a liberal or conservative.

This quiz is rigged.

I don't like this quiz, all the questions are worded unfairly. For example, one of the questions reads: Marijuana should be legalized. Instead, the question should read: Marijuana shouldn't be illegal. You see, read the first way, agreeing would make you sound liberal or green, inferring that you want the drug to be legal. But worded the second way, by agreeing you sound more extreme conservative or libertarian, not necessarily meaning that you want the drug legal, but just meaning that there's no reason why the drug should be illegal. But, anyway, I took the quiz twice, just to double check that it was, in fact, messed up and concluded that it really was. Here are my scores:

Economic Left/Right: 3.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 1.95

I land in the exact same spot as Paul Martin, the Prime minister of Cananda. But, it's really funny because I know that I am NOT authoritarian (Characterized by or favoring absolute obedience to authority, as against individual freedom).

So by being authoritarian you are aginst individual freedom, and in a way liberal, right? I know that I am 100% FOR individual freedoms and small government interference, so I am consertative, right? But, let's look at the topic of abortion.. if you're liberal, you would be pro abortion, and abortion is individual freedom, so that's not authoritarian at all, is it? All I know is that I am consertative and aginst abortion, but also for individual freedoms. It's all way too confusing for me.

Well, thats just something to think about. Here are links to other political quizzes that I found. Have Fun!!
